School of English

The School of English, one of the oldest in Minsk State Linguistic University, was established in 1948. It has since provided quality education for students majoring in Modern Foreign Languages, and specializing in one of the domains: American and British literature, Belarusian language and literature, Russian as a foreign language, rhetoric, computer linguistics, English & American Studies. The total number of students, both full-time and distance learners, currently amounts to 2400. For 70% of them, the education costs are covered by the state; 30% pay for their education. Full-time students, majoring in English as their main foreign language, are required to take a course in one of the second foreign languages: German, French, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch, Turkish, Polish and others.

The School of English spans six departments: English Phonetics, Theory and Practice of English Communication, History and Grammar of the English Language, English Lexicology, English Stylistics, and World Literature. These chairs presently employ 170 full professors, associate professors, senior lecturers and instructors. Besides educational and pedagogical activities, faculty members participate in on-going scientific research in various aspects of structural, cognitive, communicative and comparative linguistics and foreign literatures, develop new teaching and educational techniques, advise students on other general issues. Special prominence is given to the elaboration of the methods of teaching EFL at the University level. Textbooks and manuals for teachers and students of English are regularly authored and published. Faculty members issue a variety of guidebooks and teaching materials for teaching assistance and students of MSLU, as well as for other universities specializing in English.

The School of English liaises with Belarusian secondary schools and assists them in improving their methods of teaching. Some of our faculty members write textbooks for secondary schools as well as other multi-level teaching materials for different types of schools and colleges.

The School of English has initiated the establishment of the Belarusian Association of the English Language Teachers in the Republic of Belarus. A number of our faculty members maintain membership in the Association of American Studies and the Belarusian Association of Communicative Linguistics.

We maintain close relations with embassies of Great Britain, the United States, Turkey as well as with the Swedish Institute, and participate in joint educational, scientific and cultural programs. Our graduates work at secondary specialized, vocational and higher educational institutions in this country, serve as diplomats in Belarusian missions abroad or work at foreign Embassies in Belarus.
