The School of the French Language was set up in 1961.
The School comprises 4 departments: Phonetics, History, Grammar and Lexicology of the French language, with over 50 lecturers: 5 professors, 29 associate professors, 9 senior lecturers and 7 lecturers.
The teaching is conducted in the daytime mode. Most of the students' studies are state financed, however, there are fee paying students too.. The total number of students is 510.
The School turns out specialists with diplomas in modern foreign languages specializing in foreign literature, Belarusian language and literature and applied linguistics. Students can minor in English, German, Italian or Turkish. The graduates are qualified as linguists; teachers of French and another foreign language and literature; teachers of the French and Belarusian languages and literature, teachers of French and information technologies. Graduates of the School work in secondary, vocational and higher educational establishments of the Republic and represent the country in its diplomatic missions.
The School is the leading institution in the field of Romance Linguistics in the Republic of Belarus. The Departments do research in pragmalinguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics and linguaculture.
The cultural life of the School is rich and many-sided: there is a student theatre which has been staging and performing plays in French for many years and which is well-known abroad; Francophone days are annually held in March.
The School works in close contact with the French Embassy taking part in joint educational, cultural and scientific programs.
The School of French initiated the creation of the Belarusian Association of Teachers of the French Language which unites more than 200 active members and promotes the French language in educational establishments of the Republic of Belarus. The Association is a full member of the International Federation of Teachers of French (FIPF).
