School of German
The School of the German language which is one of the oldest in Minsk State Linguistic University was founded on October 1, 1948. It trains highly qualified specialists in the field of "Modern Foreign Languages" with German as their major and English as a second foreign language. Besides, students can specialize in foreign literature, Belarusian, computing and rhetoric. Nearly 800 young people study either full-time or by correspondence.
Language teaching is provided by three departments of the faculty: German Phonetics, Grammar and History of German, German Lexicology. They are staffed with 3 professors, 16 associate professors, 11 assistant professors, 13 lecturers and 10 young teaching assistants who apart from teaching carry out research in the following areas of study:
- Language contacts in Europe (Department of Lexicology); - Communicative aspects of language units (Department of Grammar and History of German; - Modal Semantic of the prosody of language means (Department of lexicology). - Interlingua interference (Department of Phonetics).
The School keeps in close contact with the Embassies of Germany and Austria, the Goethe Institute in Minsk, the International Education Centre, the German Academic Exchange Centre, the Institute of German Research. In the years of 1995-1999 the School of German fruitfully co-operated with the Rhur University of Bochum. 25 lecturers of the faculty were on study and research visits at that University. In 2000 this co-operation was further enhanced along the lines of joint Germanistic studies. 4 lecturers of the School worked at the Rhur University within the framework of a new academic program.
In 1996 the faculty signed a long-term agreement on co-operation with the Higher Technical School of Emden (Germany). This agreement opened up new opportunities for an annual bilateral exchange of teacher and student mobility groups. Since 1993 lecturers and students of the faculty have been going on study visits to Braunschweig (Germany). These visits enjoy support of the "Bridge" Civil Initiative of the city of Braunschweig. The School of German is proud of its Student Parliament whose enthusiastic members offer a wide range of voluntary social activities to the students.
The Graduates of the School work as foreign language teachers in secondary and higher schools of the country. Many of them represent the Republic of Belarus in diplomatic missions and international organizations.
