School of Spanish

The Spanish language has been taught in Minsk State Linguistic University since 1962, when the Spanish Language Department was founded. In 1966, the department was reorganized into a separate school (Faculty) of the Spanish Language.

The teaching staff at the school train specialists in the field of "Contemporary / Modern Foreign Languages (Spanish and a second foreign language)" with a specialization in foreign literature, applied linguistics, regional studies of Spain and Latin American countries. After the course the graduates of the school are awarded the qualification of a "linguist, lecturer of Spanish and a Second Foreign Language." As a second foreign language students of the School can choose English, German or French. The combination of the Spanish and English languages gives students of the School a chance to get acquainted with history, culture, and traditions of the peoples inhabiting both South and North America.

There are two departments with 26 teaching staff members at the School of the Spanish Language. They are the Department of Phonetics, Grammar of the Spanish Language, and the Department of Lexicology of the Spanish Language.
Research interests of the faculty members range widely in themes:
lexico-grammatical semantics of the Spanish language and other Romance languages, semiotics, the history of development of the Spanish literary language in Spain and other Latin America countries, contemporary methods of teaching Spanish in high and secondary school.

About 60 graduates go to work annually into secondary, technical and high schools in the Republic of Belarus, as well as representing our country abroad as staff of diplomatic missions.
