Minsk State Linguistic University has been training translators and interpreters since 1964. In 1969, a special School of Translation and Interpreting was opened. The School of Translation and Interpreting offers professional courses for future interpreters and translators majoring in two foreign languages (with an option of a third foreign language).

As their major, students can choose any of the languages listed below: English, German, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, and Turkish. As a second foreign language, the following languages can be chosen: English, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Persian, Swedish, and Dutch. Students that complete five-year undergraduate studies receive the qualification of Linguist/ Interpreter. The School of Translation and Interpreting is proud of more than 2,500 alumni that have graduated with our diploma. Our students receive a thorough linguistic education and extensive professional training in interpreting and translation. They can choose to specialize in the following fields:
1. Specialized translation (economics, commerce, law; diplomacy, international relations, international law; science and technology, information technologies).
2. Translation of prose, poetry and literary criticism.
3. Simultaneous interpretation (conference translating, simultaneous interpretation at international conferences, seminars, etc., translation of video production and big screen movies) Presently, there are 670 students studying at the School, of which 110 are students from various countries of Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America studying at the international division of the School. 

The School has three departments: the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation (the English language, headed by Associate Professor Inna V. Shablygin, Candidate of Philology, the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation (the German language), headed by Associate Professor Tatyana F. Ivanova, Candidate of Philology, and the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation (Romance Languages), headed by Associate Professor Vadim V. Kolesnikov, Candidate of Philology. The faculty ensure the coverage of theoretical and practical courses of the academic curriculum, including a course on Oriental Languages.
Members of the faculty have had substantial training and vast experience both in this country and abroad.

The faculty of the three Departments are involved in research into the aspects of interlingua and intercultural communication, theory and art of translation, lexicography, and preparation of bi- and multilingual dictionaries.
Graduates of the School of Translation and Interpreting work in more than 40 countries of the world in international organizations, such as the UN, UNESCO, the World Bank, in leading companies and businesses, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and embassies and diplomatic missions of the Republic of Belarus abroad. Among graduates there are Ambassadors of the Republic of Belarus to several countries, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus.

The School of Translation and Interpreting is home to the centre of translation of literature from three European languages. We have translated into the Belarusian language masterpieces of classical literature as well as works by famous present-day writers and poets.
