School of Retraining and Teacher Development

The history of the School of Retraining and Teacher Development (SRTD) of Minsk State Linguistic University goes back to 1968. The School acquired its present name in 1995.

At present SRTD successfully runs the following professional courses:

1) Retraining of individuals with initial higher education in a variety of specialties which will qualify them to teach foreign languages at secondary level.

The retraining course in English, German and French lasts 10 months. At the end of the 1000-hour course the trainees receive a certificate that enables them to teach foreign languages in schools of the Republic of Belarus.

2) Teacher development course for the teachers of foreign languages of universities, lyceums and colleges of the Republic of Belarus.

The 2-week course aims to improve the quality of teaching standards for the trainees with a various levels of expertise. During the course the most experienced teachers may take a special exam to acquire Grade 'A' teaching qualification.

3) Short-term (24 hours) teacher development courses in the following disciplines:

  • 'Computer-based technologies in teaching foreign languages' (course supervisor: Associate Professor L. Shimchuk)
  • 'Intensive methods in teaching foreign languages' (course supervisor: Associate Professor R. Fastovets)


4) Authentic seminars aiming to train qualified lecturers in a variety of fields:

  • theoretical phonetics
  • theoretical grammar
  • the history of the language
  • stylistics
  • typology
  • social studies
  • literature


Here are the topics of some of these seminars:

  • 'New phonetical and phonological studies of the German language' (course designer: Professor E. Zaretskaya)
  • 'New methods in teaching foreign languages' (course designer: Professor I. Andreasyan)

5) Professional visits of teachers of other universities, lyceums and colleges at Faculties and Schools of Minsk State Linguistic University. These short-term visits (from 1 to 4 months) enable the researchers to observe lectures, seminars and practical classes, design their syllabuses etc.
