The University is currently a party to 52 contracts with foreign universities and a participant of 19 international programmes.
Special priority is given to relations with Russian universities. MSLU is a member of the Russian Language Teachers and Methodologists' Union and has partnership contracts with four Russian leading universities: Moscow, Nizhniy Novgorod, Pyatigorsk Linguistic Universities and St. Petersburg State University.
Contacts with universities in Austria, France, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Italy and Great Britain are maintained as well. The University carries out joint projects with Canadian, US, Chinese and Turkish higher educational institutions; it also hosts international major scientific conferences and carries out scientific research on an agreement with Belarusian and foreign enterprises, foundations and organisations.
The University admits students from abroad - currently, there are 275 foreign students from neighbouring and overseas countries: Armenia, Belgium, Vietnam, Ghana, Germany, Israel, Iran, Spain, Yemen, Canada, Cyprus, China, Lebanon, Lithuania, Morocco, Mongolia, Peru, Poland, Syria, Turkmenistan, USA, Turkey, Sri-Lanka, Sweden, France, Yugoslavia, South Korea, Japan, etc.
The MSLU foreign relations are aimed at:
- studying other countries' experience in foreign languages teaching, in order to enhance the teaching process by means of new ideas; studying foreign tradition in teaching main specialization courses similar to the MSLU's programmes in the sphere of cross-cultural studies and information, international tourism, PR, political and economic studies, world literature, computer linguistics, Russian and Belarusian as a foreign language, etc.;
- inviting native speakers trained to teach languages, thus modelling natural language environment; organizing educational trips for MSLU faculty and students; participating in international university conferences and programmes; organizing Russian and Belarusian language courses for foreigners.
The University is rated first in Belarus for linguistic education, which enables it to organize large-scale international activities. Thus, in 2001 it hosted the European Year of Languages project. The University takes part in numerous international educational projects, including the creation of the language portfolio, multilingual dictionaries, etc.
A UNESCO Centre functions on the MSLU premises as well as various educational centres, such as the Linguistic Education Centre, the Turkish Language and Culture Centre, the Chinese Language and Culture Centre, the Austrian Library, in cooperation with their foreign colleagues, set up with the help of Embassies to Belarus and foreign universities. Many university faculty members are working on new generation textbooks and manuals for Belarusian secondary and higher schools.
